Quantum Sensing
Challenge: Achieve and surpass the standard quantum limit of devices to achieve ultrasensitive sensors and demonstrate applications to quantum networks and quantum computing.
Approach: Build on Alberta’s differential excellence in experimental optomechanics, nanophotonics, singleelectron transistors and coherent infrared lasers, and theoretical expertise in quantum metrology and general relativity to develop ultrasensitive, optomechanical sensors. Davis, Barclay, Das, Sanders and Simon will work on sensing near and beyond the quantum limit, while Davis, Wolkow, Barclay and Simon will work on field detection with quantum systems ranging from the nanoscale to the macroscale.
